![]() ![]() They are fun characters however so shouldn't pose too much of an issue with young children. I do think the racist depiction of the crows will go over young childrens' heads but I did notice this being problematic watching it in my early teens so this is probably worth a discussion with older children. While there are parts of this film I think are wonderful and extremely well done there are others I don't think are really appropriate. You don't fool anyone with common sense, certainly not me, and stop being "offended" or speaking on behalf of me or other people for your satisfaction, feel better people or whatever is your goal or agenda, especially for stupid, innocent and harmless things like this. And inform yourselves much better, stop being (pretend to be) "offended", I know it's a lie, stop. If you find the crows or Dumbo film "racist", it's just a problem of yours, either black or white you are. ![]() Well I'm black, REAL black, not "African American", black American or simply American, and I love Dumbo, it's my favorite Disney film and one of my absolute favourite films in general, and the Crows are my favourite characters of the film, if not even my favourite Disney characters, and nobody touch their iconic song " When I See An Elephant Fly", they are the most entertaining and best part of the film. In conclusion, I understood that there are people here who pretended to be someone else (I smelled the lie on their "heritage" from miles especially in one comment if there aren't even more, creepy) to appear and feel entitled to criticize the film for clueless and stupid reasons, to push a false narrative and an agenda and to pretend to be "offended", repeating simply what other detractors said and wrote. And they are not the only "faceless" characters, there are many minor white characters who are faceless, with poor facial features or seen only as silhouettes, there is even at least a moment in which even Timothy is seen faceless, I remind you that this is/was a very low-budget animated film. ![]() They're not mocking themselves in their song. You can ask black veteran former Disney animator Floyd Norman, he even wrote an article named "Black Crows and Other PC Nonsense", or you can see Wikipedia, Disney Wiki, IMDb, AFI and other sources.Ģ-The Roustabouts are a reflection of that age! Do you really believe there weren't exploited, poor and with no instruction black workers in the Southern America in the 1930s and 40s? In their song they explain how they are poorly treated, like the circus' animals, exploited and insulted by the Ringmaster (then Timothy becomes the new manager of Dumbo and presumably of the circus), they are showing us how's the life behind the joyful circus' mask. ![]() They are also the heroes of the film and with the most important role, the ones who really comprehend Dumbo's condition or situation as also they are ostracized and marginalized characters. 4 of the crows were voiced by black actors and singers (James Baskett, Nick Stewart, Hall Johnson and Jim Carmichael) and their live-action references or models for the animators were the black duo of dancers Freddie and Eugene Jackson. All this controversy was started many years later by a white liberal, who critized the crow characters, it all started there, and you know how these things go, at least in America. They were also inspired by black artists of that time and they characterized the characters by basing on the backchat found on the band records of Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. Let's make things clear once and for all!ġ-The head or leader crow was named "Jim Crow" only on the original model sheets, and was intended by animator Ward Kimball to mock the Jim Crow laws in the South (Dumbo is set in Florida in 1941), and was renamed DANDY CROW in the 1950s, but for obvious reasons the original name remained the most well-known, in Dumbo-related merchandise the leader crow was/is named Dandy, even AFI's page about Dumbo says it, but no name is mentioned in the film. ![]()
